Why did Jimmy Johnson win the Espy for best driver?

Not sure if that was the category or not, or what the time span was for receiving the award, but they awarded it on the 16th of this month and it aired last night on ESPN. If they want to keep ESPN up to the minute like most sports are covered now days, shouldn't they have given that ESPY award to Kyle Bush??

Jimmie Johnson has won back to back championships in Nascar thats why he won it. Kyle was nominated for breakthrough athlete but didnt win it, Adrian Peterson of the Vikings did.

Johnson won the championship for 2007. If Shrub wins it this year, he'll probably win next years ESPY.

Well out of the drivers that were nominated I would have picked Jimmie Johnson also.  Kyle will get his turn next year.

Yes I know he is on the ballot his year, but they gave it to Jimmie for his performance last year in winning the chase.

Because Jimmie Johnson won the Championship last year and he is a good driver.

Kyle Busch wasn't even up for that award he was up for a few others but didn't get those.

I'm thinking his second consecutive championship had a bit to do with it. What are you going to remember, the guy that wins the most races but can't close the deal or the guy that comes through and wins the championship? If Kyle holds on to win the championship then he will be the hands down winner in that category next year. It's about getting a title not just wins.

edit:You're right, it's a popularity contest. But the ESPY's are kind of a joke for NASCAR. The majority of people who vote on the ESPY's are football, basketball and baseball fans.

And those who cast ballots that aren't NASCAR fans voted for Jimmie because they knew he was the champion last year.

Jimmie's the most recognizable of those people.

Kyle has only won a bunch of races and has yet to win a championship.  Jimmie Johnson won 4 races IN A ROW during the chase, with all the pressure on him to produce.  We will see if Kyle is up to the task, until then he is not the greatest driver in NASCAR just the next big thing to come along.
