Why did Karl Rove try to butt in on McCain's potential VP pick?

Question

Rove reportedly contacted potential VP nominee Joe Lieberman personally last week and asked him to withdraw his name from McCain's short VP list.

Why is Rove butting into McCain's business?

Does he have a position with McCain campaign that he isn't stating while giving political commentary on Fox News?

I hope McCain DOES pick Lieberman. It will be fun watching the repugs go apesh*t.

He's probably just trying to stay relevant.

Oh how the mighty have fallen, permanent majority, ha.  What a dangerous idea for any democracy or any party.

Is he actually butting in? Or has he been part of the process all along? If he hasn't been part of it. Then possibly he is trying to hang onto his lagging power.
