  1. It's not Why question it's a What did he do question.  He gave into King Arthur's wife, he just fell in love with her. He betrayed his friendship, elegance, and respect for the king.

  4. There are several accounts of the tale of the Round Table. The one I am referring to is "The Once And Future King" by White.

    Lancelot was in love with Arthur's wife, Guenievre and it was a reciprocal love. Arthur had knowledge of this but helped them to hide it, because he was also deeply in love with Guenievre and if the relationship became known, he would have to kill her. However, knights led by Mordred managed to make this a public affair. Lancelot had then no other choice than abducting Guenievre and escaping from Arthur's court who in turn had no other choice than chasing and fighting him.
