It seems strange that the settlers of the Mayflower planned to arrive in the new world during winter. They left England in 1620, in the month of September and arrived in November. They passed the winter living on their commisioned ship, and settled the Plymouth colony in March 1621. Two weeks later the ship departed to return to England. Loss of life during that first winter on the ship cost the lives of half the pilgrims and half the ships crew. Why hadn't they planned to reach the new world at a more hospitable time for trying to establish a colony?
