Question:

Why did Mayweather retire?

Do you really think the undefeated welterweight champion is gone for good, especially considering how much money is on the table for a rematch with Oscar De La Hoya? But we all know how boxing retirements usually go. What about Cotto could he have taken Mayweather out? I guess we will never know

  1. I think Cotto and Margarito played a part in Floyd's decision to retire.  He is concerned about his legacy and it would have been diminished if he took a rematch with Oscar and retired without having fought the best opponents out there. Gatti, Mitchell, Baldomir, Judah, De La Hoya and Hatton were not the best opponents available when he fought them, so if he retires now many people will look at the end of his career and say he finished it fighting a list of opponents that would have made Floyd Patterson proud.

Was Floyd Mayweather Jr. a great fighter?  Maybe.  Was he a great champion?  No.  Great champions retire when they run out of top caliber opponents.  Floyd is retiring after running away from his top caliber opponents.

  2. I don't know I hope he comes back

  3. It's hard to image someone who loves $$$ as much as Floyd walking away from big paydays. Maybe, retirement is being used as leverage in negotiating with Oscar and/or winner of Cotto/Margarito.

  4. well my opinion is this mayweather would have won against delahoya rematch, and he just couldn't see himself fighting against the winner of margarito/cotto. either of these 2 guys could of kicked mayweather's ***. 31 yrs.old and in his prime, he  decides to retire. what a shame i don't care that he is set for life but as a boxing fan i wanted him to fight the best, other fighters that are in there prime not old boxers.

  5. i think mayweather is going to be gone for a little while, but sooner or later mayweather is going to come back in the boxing sport

  6. Well, if he's tweaking his detractors, he's doing a great job.  I think I read somewhere that his knuckles hurt so much that it affects the way he has to fight.  Pressuring the opponent early could get his hands broke...notice how he throttled back after the early rounds against Hatton, then picked it up in the 9th and scored the KO a little later.  He was managing the fight according to his abilities and liabilities.

My guess is that he's serious, but money talks.  His stock just went out the roof for any fighter that now wants to fight him.  To my knowledge, the fight with ODLH was already signed (somebody correct me if I'm wrong), and he either didn't like the terms or, if the fight wasn't signed, is looking for favorable terms, such as weight, ring size, cash, glove type.  Last time, ODLH made ALL the terms and Floyd had to accept them.  So now I think it's possible he's trying to return the favor.

  7. i highly doubt mayweather will stay out of the ring. he will miss the fame and the big money

  8. Its got to be for negotiation purposes, otherwise he is throwing everything in his career away, aside from the money of course. If he means it, then hes a coward, and if it is for promotional or negotiation leverage then I guess whatever.

But if he does retire then he is a coward. And Floyd Sr can look down his nose at him, His old man will have one up on him, and Floyd wont be able to live with that.

Mabey he is scared because his father is going to show Oscar how to beat him.

This is no the first time Pretty Boy retired eaither.
