  1. Mexico's agricultural sector underwent drastic changes in recent decades for many reasons (business consolidation, changes in the market, NAFTA), and it became harder for many small farmers to survive in the country. Thus, there has been a huge migration to the Mexico City metropolis, where people could find jobs or business opportunities. Other cities, such as those along the border, saw similar influxes of country folk seeking jobs in factories.

In addition to this migration, other countryfolk left Mexico entirely to go to the United States in search of work.

  2. Cities are more heavily populated so it stands to reason they would have more children.  Also, people in cities there usually have better health and health care and better jobs.  They can afford to have more kids.

  3. There is nothing special about Mexico or Mexico City.  Throughout the world, people from the countryside have been moving into the city.  This is mostly for economic reasons, but also, I suspect, because city life is that most portrayed in the media, creating an enticement -  especially for the young.

  4. Because people immigrated from all over the country to find more economic opportunity in the capital.

  5. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it grew faster because more people moved there than anywhere else in the country.
