Why did Obama not support the Born Alive Infant Protection Act that even extreme pro-choice group NARAL did?

  1. He wasn't in the Senate when that bill was passed and he was never noted as having supported or not supported it. He opposed the Illinois Induced Infant Liability Act, a bill with similar wording, but with one important difference. The federal legislation included the phrase "Nothing in this section shall be construed to affirm, deny, expand, or contract any legal status or legal right applicable to any member of the species homo sapiens at any point prior to being `born alive' as defined in this section." This stipulation was not in the Illinois version, which meant that the bill could be construed as prohibiting legal abortion.

    The most important thing to take away from the whole thing is that the thing the bill purported to make illegal - infanticide - was already illegal. The Illinois Department of Health said that it was already illegal. The bill was not necessary to prevent infanticide.
