Why did Obama said his wife is off limits but attacked Cindy McCain?

There was this ad about houses and they used Cindy McCain but when Obama Wife was used in a ad everyone keep on saying keep the wives out of the campaign. Then they used Cindy McCain was used in a ad there was nobody saying lay of his wife like they did with Obama wife.
