Why did Obama single out the AK-47 in his acceptance speech tonight when he touched on the 2nd amendment?

I legally own several Kalashnikov (AK-47) semi-auto variants. Why did he choose that particular firearm to single out when it is used less than .25 (1/4) percent in gun related crimes according to the FBI. I guess he knew that he wouldn't lose any votes from most people that own them since we all know that he is as anti-gun as they come. Still why alienate any perspective voters?

Obama is for gun rights but war weapons have no place in society.

He was trying to show the difference between being anti-gun and anti-gun-crime.  He would put in instantaneous background checks, so law abiding gun owners like YOU would have an EASIER time buying your guns and ammo.  Meanwhile, people like the Virginia Tech shooter, would be flagged as having been an institutionalized psychotic.

I think it was because people are very familiar with that type of gun, and he wanted to give an example. I don't think he meant to insult anyone.

I think you're digging at little too deep on this one. He mentioned keeping them out of the hands of criminals. Why would anyone have a problem with that? I think you would have complained no matter which type of gun he referenced.

Because it is an extreme.  His point was that you don't have to deny hunters their guns or collectors their guns to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of criminals.  He is not anti-gun.  Here is a good explanation of his position:

actually, Obama's point about AK-47's was one of the best lines of the speech....and I'm a big 2nd amendment supporter.

Like many democrats, be believes that being allowed to own a gun means you can only use a gun to commit violent crimes.

Of course no one in his right mind would carry an assault rifle in a robbery or burglary.  They're just too cumbersome and the range is entirely unnecessary.  If I'm going to rob a bank, I'm not going to be more than 1 meters away from the people I'm trying to intimidate, let alone 250 (which would necessitate a rifle).  Some people, however, are never going to let simple logic get in their way.

The right to bear arms is sound but needs to be tempered with common sense else there would be some extremest who wold want a rocket launcher, probably a cheap Russian or Chinese made one too!

No ones rights are being threatened either - the US Supreme court just decided that we do have the right to bear arms outside a militia - but the types of arms can be regulated - you say you need a sawed off shotgun for what?
