The DOD has a strict policy against using visits to wounded soldiers for political purposes. They informed the Obama campaign that his visit would be welcome however no journalists or other trappings of the campaign would be permitted. He opted to forego the visit. Note that the President and others visit the troops on a regular basis but always without the press or any public statement of the fact. The only cameras permitted usually are those of the soldiers and family members who choose to commemorate the event. I should also point out that actor Denzel Washington and his family have done a lot for wounded soldiers and have kept it out of the press.

Actually- He DID. -But His Pentagon Contact advised Him against it. The Concern was that Obama's role as a Candidate for the Presidency- might have made it seem "Inappropriate" under the Circumstances (Which, knowing the Republicans- they would've ageed HAD He done so...). Obama was going to be "called on it"- either way.
