Why did Orr from "Catch-22" want big cheeks?

Question

Orr put crab apples in his cheeks because they were better than horse chestnuts, but why did he want big cheeks to begin with?

I know why the w***e was hitting him on the head (because he paid her, presumably so he could be injured enough to leave combat duty)

but this facet to Orr's personality still mystifies me.

i think the point of Orr was that he did things for his reasons and those reasons were usually good enough, Ie crashing the planes over and over or getting the w***e to beat him
