Why did Orr from "Catch-22" want big cheeks?

Orr put crab apples in his cheeks because they were better than horse chestnuts, but why did he want big cheeks to begin with?

I know why the w***e was hitting him on the head (because he paid her, presumably so he could be injured enough to leave combat duty)

but this facet to Orr's personality still mystifies me.

  1. i think the point of Orr was that he did things for his reasons and those reasons were usually good enough, Ie crashing the planes over and over or getting the w***e to beat him
