Why did Pittsburgh change name from Pittsburg, PA, and when?

  1. Pittsburgh was originally spelled with an "H." Then someone back in the late 1800s had the brilliant idea to drop the "H" because it was thought to be confusing. I guess most "burg" cities don't use an "H" at the end.

    Fortunately, it only lasted a short while (about 20 years). It never really caught on and officially went back Pittsburgh with the "H" in 1911.

    It does, though, help make it easier to date historical items. There is only a short period of time when the "Pittsburg" spelling was used.
