    ISLAM AND TERRORISM

    BY

    DR. ZAKIR NAIK

    MUSLIMS ARE FUNDAMENTALISTS AND TERRORISTS

    Question:

Why are most of the Muslims fundamentalists and terrorists?

    Answer:

This question is often hurled at Muslims, either directly or indirectly, during any discussion on religion or world affairs. Muslim stereotypes are perpetuated in every form of the media accompanied by gross misinformation about Islam and Muslims. In fact, such misinformation and false propaganda often leads to discrimination and acts of violence against Muslims. A case in point is the anti-Muslim campaign in the American media following the Oklahoma bomb blast, where the press was quick to declare a ‘Middle Eastern conspiracy’ behind the attack. The culprit was later identified as a soldier from the American Armed Forces.

Let us analyze this allegation of ‘fundamentalism’ and ‘terrorism’:

    1. Definition of the word ‘fundamentalist’

A fundamentalist is a person who follows and adheres to the fundamentals of the doctrine or theory he is following. For a person to be a good doctor, he should know, follow, and practise the fundamentals of medicine. In other words, he should be a fundamentalist in the field of medicine. For a person to be a good mathematician, he should know, follow and practise the fundamentals of mathematics. He should be a fundamentalist in the field of mathematics. For a person to be a good scientist, he should know, follow and practise the fundamentals of science. He should be a fundamentalist in the field of science.

    2. Not all ‘fundamentalists’ are the same

One cannot paint all fundamentalists with the same brush. One cannot categorize all fundamentalists as either good or bad. Such a categorization of any fund amentalist will depend upon the field or activity in which he is a fundamentalist. A fundamentalist robber or thief causes harm to society and is therefore undesirable. A fundamentalist doctor, on the other hand, benefits society and earns much respect.

    3. I am proud to be a Muslim fundamentalist

I am a fundamentalist Muslim who, by the grace of Allah, knows, follows and strives to practise the fundamentals of Islam. A true Muslim does not shy away from being a fundamentalist. I am proud to be a fundamentalist Muslim because, I know that the fundamentals of Islam are beneficial to humanity and the whole world. There is not a single fundamental of Islam that causes harm or is against the interests of the human race as a whole. Many people harbour misconceptions about Islam and consider several teachings of Islam to be unfair or improper. This is due to insufficient and incorrect knowledge of Islam. If one critically analyzes the teachings of Islam with an open mind, one cannot escape the fact that Islam is full of benefits both at the individual and collective levels.

    4. Dictionary meaning of the word ‘fundamentalist’

According to Webster’s dictionary ‘fundamentalism’ was a movement in American Protestanism that arose in the earlier part of the 20th century. It was a reaction to modernism, and stressed the infallibility of the Bible, not only in matters of faith and morals but also as a literal historical record. It stressed on belief in the Bible as the literal word of God. Thus fundamentalism was a word initially used for a group of Christians who believed that the Bible was the verbatim word of God without any errors and mistakes.

According to the Oxford dictionary ‘fundamentalism’ means ‘strict maintenance of ancient or fundamental doctrines of any religion, especially Islam’.

Today the moment a person uses the word fundamentalist he thinks of a Muslim who is a terrorist.

    5. Every Muslim should be a terrorist

Every Muslim should be a terrorist. A terrorist is a person who causes terror. The moment a robber sees a policeman he is terrified. A policeman is a terrorist for the robber. Similarly every Muslim should be a terrorist for the antisocial elements of society, such as thieves, dacoits and rapists. Whenever such an anti-social element sees a Muslim, he should be terrified. It is true that the word ‘terrorist’ is generally used for a person who causes terror among the common people. But a true Muslim should only be a terrorist to selective people i.e. anti-social elements, and not to the common innocent people. In fact a Muslim should be a source of peace for innocent people.

    6. Different labels given to the same individual for the same action, i.e. ‘terrorist’ and ‘patriot’

Before India achieved independence from British rule, some freedom fighters of India who did not subscribe to non-violence were labeled as terrorists by the British government. The same individuals have been lauded by Indians for the same activities and hailed as ‘patriots’. Thus two different labels have been given to the same people for the same set of actions. One is calling him a terrorist while the other is calling him a patriot. Those who believed

    7. Indonesia and Malaysia.

Indonesia is a country that has the maximum number of Muslims in the world. The majority of people in Malaysia are Muslims. May one ask, ’Which Muslim army went to Indonesia and Malaysia?’

    8. East Coast of Africa.

Similarly, Islam has spread rapidly on the East Coast of Africa. One may again ask, if Islam was spread by the sword, ’Which Muslim army went to the East Coast of Africa?’

    9. Thomas Carlyle.

The famous historian, Thomas Carlyle, in his book ’Heroes and Hero worship’, refers to this misconception about the spread of Islam: ’The sword indeed, but where will you get your sword? Every new opinion, at its starting is precisely in a minority of one. In one man’s head alone. There it dwells as yet. One man alone of the whole world believes it, there is one man against all men. That he takes a sword and try to propagate with that, will do little for him. You must get your sword! On the whole, a thing will propagate itself as it can.’

    10. No compulsion in religion.

With which sword was Islam spread? Even if Muslims had it they could not use it to spread Islam because the Qur’an says in the following verse:

’Let there be no compulsion in religion:

Truth stands out clear from error’

    [Al-Qur’an 2:256]

    11. Sword of the Intellect.

It is the sword of intellect. The sword that conquers the hearts and minds of people. The Qur’an says in Surah Nahl, chapter 16 verse 125:

’Invite (all) to the way of thy Lord

    with wisdom and beautiful preaching;

and argue with them in ways that are

    best and most gracious.’

    [Al-Qur’an 16:125]

    12. Increase in the world religions from 1934 to 1984.

An article in Reader’s Digest ‘Almanac’, year book 1986, gave the statistics of the increase of percentage of the major religions of the world in half a century from 1934 to 1984. This article also appeared in ‘The Plain Truth’ magazine. At the top was Islam, which increased by 235%, and Christianity had increased only by 47%. May one ask, which war took place in this century which converted millions of people to Islam?

    13. Islam is the fastest growing religion in America and Europe.

Today the fastest growing religion in America is Islam. The fastest growing religion in Europe in Islam. Which sword is forcing people in the West to accept Islam in such large numbers?

    14. Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson.

Dr. Joseph Adam Pearson rightly says, ’People who worry that nuclear weaponry will one day fall in the hands of the Arabs, fail to realize that the Islamic bomb has been dropped already, it fell the day MUHAMMED (pbuh) was born’

  2. [Pooya/Ali Commentary 9:4]

Fulfilling all obligations even to non-muslims who had not proved traitors was enjoined as a cardinal principle. The Muslims were commanded to fight against those infidels who violated the pledges and acted treacherously, in order to destroy the power base of evil.

    [Pooya/Ali Commentary 9:5]

The command to fight against the perfidious and treacherous group of infidels who persistently violated the treaties and tried to destroy peace and security, was to restore law and order in the society. The command was not general but only refers to particular groups of the Makkan idolaters who were notorious offenders. They used to harass the Muslims whenever they found them helpless and when overpowered prayed for amnesty by making treaties which they used to break before their ink was dried.

When war becomes inevitable it must be fought with vigour. It may take the form of slaughter, or capture, or siege or ambush, but even then there is room for repentance and amendment, and if that takes place forgiveness is enjoined for the establishment of peace and harmony.

    [Pooya/Ali Commentary 9:6]

The injunction to give asylum to those enemies who seek protection is to provide them opportunities for hearing the true message of Allah, so that they may see the light of reason and accept the true religion of Allah. It is the highest form of tolerance.

It is said that after hearing the verses of this surah from Ali ibn abi Talib some of the pagans asked him if they went to the Holy Prophet to know about Islam would they be killed? In reply Ali recited this verse.

    Aqa Mahdi Puya says:

Islam enjoins upon its followers to give people every kind of facility to hear and understand the word of Allah. No other scripture contains such a provision for those who do not believe in the faith it propagates. The pagans of Makka, the worst enemies of Allah, were allowed to enjoy protection so that they might first know the teachings of the religion of Allah and then decide about their future conduct.

    [Pooya/Ali Commentary 9:7]

More emphasis has been laid on that which has been said in the preceding verses about the fulfilment of promises and covenants and under what circumstances they can be treated as cancelled. The treacherous trend and tendency of the polytheists necessarily urged them to break pacts, destroy good faith, barter away the words of Allah for a petty price, and to have no regard for kinship or treaties with the believers. They had transgressed all bounds, therefore severance of relations with them became necessary, yet those who repented and came into the fold of the true faith were not only considered for forgiveness but accepted as brothers in faith.

At all events the believers have been reminded to safeguard themselves against evil with full awareness of Allah's commands and laws.

    [Pooya/Ali Commentary 9:13]

In view of the shameless disregard of treaties by the enemy, their underhand plots to discredit the Holy Prophet and turn him out of Madina as he had been turned out of Makka, the believers have been asked to fight against the evil of polytheism and prove their sincere faith by test and trial, struggle and sacrifice. Allah shall punish them by the hands of those believers who have striven hard in the cause of Allah and have not allied themselves ever with any one save Allah and His Prophet.

  3. Muhammed (sallahu aglahim wasalam) was ordered by Allah (subhana wataglah). Do not question what my dear, beloved Prophet Muhammed (sallahu aglahim wasalam) did. He did what was best for his ummah. Accept it, it`s clear cut, either you follow Islam The world of Allah, subhana wataglah and if not, there is not point in living!

    Wa alakuma Salam

  4. umm, u shud watch the message. its an old and not the best movie (graphics and stuff) but it shows the life of our prophet (at the time ur talking about)

also there are some people who have huge tafseer for quran. so u should check those out rather than the ones that make tafseer word for word.

    pce

  5. well fighting was forbidden before Hijra to give the unbelievers the time giving up worshiping idols, then Allah (swt) gave Muhammad (saw) and Muslims the permission to defend themselves against Mushrikeen's continuous attacks:

"We are best aware of what they say, and thou (O Muhammad) art in no wise a compeller over them. But warn by the Qur'an him who feareth My threat" (50:45)

"Then have patience (O Muhammad) even as the stout of heart among the messengers (of old) had patience, and seek not to hasten on the doom for them. On the day when they see that which they are promised (it will seem to them) as though they had tarried but an hour of daylight. A clear message. Shall any be destroyed save evil-living folk?" (46:35)

    then the permission:

"Sanction (to fight) is given unto those who fight because they have been wronged; and Allah is indeed Able to give them victory"(22:39)

  6. Chapter 9 is when the Pagans broke the Treaty. It was in a state of war. Mohammed (pbuh) did not, and never did he do in his entire life, wage useless wars or wars for personal gains.

He defended his family, his land, his religion and people. He was kicked out of his homeland, Mecca, so what do you expect him to do? Sit back and do nothing? Certanily not!

Mohammed (pbuh) went to regain his lost land, and the land of all Muslimin.

  7. Islam forces Jihad or War to establish it's power. It teaches it's believers  Allah's monopoly. If the power attains by Islam all over the world, no compulsion to religion. Non- believers can live within the territory of AllaH accepting authority of Islam giving 'Jisya'- a tax to Islamicgoverment for living as non-believer. But non- believer will never has right to practice his religion.

  8. prophet did not wage war 4 religion. in badr the muslims went to take their property which was been looted which resulted in war due to the kuffaars.

the ohud was from the side of the disbelievers. muslims did not ask them to fight.

the khandaq or ahzaab as u call it, it was also from the kuffaars. they started.

the treaty of hudaybia was a treety that the kuffaars made the prophet sign so that the muslims do not enter mecca and they broke the treaty.

the other battles were fought cuz the jews betrayed the muslims.

about chapter 9: when the kuffaar came to fight the muslims the prophet wanted peace nd he did not will to fight but some sahaba said that the kuffaar had taken their property and thats not the least. their wives and kids as well and they cou;ld not resist. so Allah orderd them to fight when the fight but when they ask for peace give them peace. 4 all wat the kuffaar did , the muslims were asked to giv the kuffaar peace wen they wanted.

there is indeed no compulsion in religion and the prophet did not force anyone to accept islaam. he called people if they liked they accepted. whats so very wrong with that?????

  9. Many of brothers and sisters answered you in their best. I tell you a simple thought.

Allah (s.w.t) sends His Messengers with the Truth. To be proclaimed, practiced and to strive upon that. Every nation had their warner come. But with every prophet had their enemies. For some it was from the rulers like the Pharoah for Hazrath Musa (a.s). Dawood (a.s) fought with the Jalooth (Giliath). For Ibrahim (a.s) it was the Namrood. For Isa (Jesus Christ) (pbuh) it were the Romans and the Jews themselves.

So every Prophet comes with a message from Allah. They all have their followers and also enemies. To our beloved Prophet (s.a.w), the enemies were numerous. From all sides. He came to a people who were the worst in the history of man. Who were fighters one another for tribes, who used to eat the dead. Who used to drink and had no laws of marriage. Whose people always carried a sword in them and killing was very normal. This is the people of Makkah. Prophet (s.a.w) did the efforts of Da'wa in Makkah.  Just for believing in One Allah, they all were tortured while they tortured none. It was for them to Pray and give alms nothing beyond that. But the people of Makkah kept harming them. It was only after Hijarah, the permission For Qital (war) was given against those coming to oppress Muslims. So were some of the wars when Kuffars of Makkah came to attack Muslims. It was never to expand, never to take control of a territory or anything like that. It was the simple effort to preserve that light of Islam and to make it visible.

So, many Prophets had to fight with their enemies. Prophets never wished a war with it's people. It is done for a purpose. If it were for the land and people, Prophet would call himself as the King which they never wished or did, but their aim is to strive in order to fulfill that light. It is their duty and Allah makes them a tool for His great message.

So our duty is also the same. Not to wage war. But to proclaim the message of Islam. To strive upon the way of Allah and for Da'wa. We are the selected Ummah for that great task. When time comes we are oppressed to be a Muslim and strive for Islam, it's all our duty to struggle for it's protection. But all hardships comes when we start Da'wa towards Allah for the sake of Allah upon the way of Prophets.

    Allah knows best.

  10. most of anti-Islam use the following verse to prove their so-called claims islamic terrorism

[9:5] And when the forbidden months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever you find them and take them captive, and beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent and observe Prayer and pay the Zakaat, then leave their way free. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Merciful.

but why don't u read thefollowinf  verses  , coz the answer is there

[9:4] Except those of the disbelievers with whom you have entered into a treaty and who have not subsequently failed you in anything nor aided anyone against you. So fulfil to these the treaty you have made with them till their term. Surely Allah loves those that are righteous.

[9:6] And if anyone of the idolaters seeks protection of thee, grant him protection so that he may hear the Word of Allah; then convey him to his place of security. That is because they are a people who have no knowledge.

[9:13] Will you not fight a people who have broken their oaths, and who plotted to turn out the Messenger, and they were the first to commence hostilities against you? Do you fear them? Nay, Allah is most worthy that you should fear Him, if you are believers.

i think it answers ur Q sister

  11. That was the time when there were few muslims and majority of them were kaafirs. Kaafirs were always ready for their attack on the minority of muslims. Islam had to be spread. They did jihad not only through their swords  but they fought with their tongues as well.

and this way they made more people aware of Islamic teachings and beliefs and after sometime they did understand and embrace Islam.

Islam still didn;t force them or gave them any dead thread that if they do not embrace it, they will be killed. no... and they fought because even kaafirs were ready for the fight, we didn't force them to fight, they themselves came and were ready for the fight, and came to know the real meaning of Islam and embraced islam~!

    like read this verse:

Allah says: " And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone). But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zâlimûn (the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.) (Al-Baqarah 2:193)

this shows tell them about Islam, make them understand...fight doesn't mean one will actually start FIGHTING, coz if u notice, in the end of the verse Allah says :"But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zâlimûn (the polytheists, and wrong-doers, etc.) (Al-Baqarah 2:193): means if they do not understand, then let them be, Allah will look them, as for people like they have h**l fire.

    hope you got it now

READ MY EDITION ABOVE: and yes dear, islam still didn't force, they did fight for themselves telling others about Islam, and people did understand and came into the beautiful religion Islam by themselves,, by understanding, by learning.

  12. If Prophet Mohammad use sword for Islam there is no way he could be succeeded . If one person have to do a work which he want to impose he is alone If he'll use gun He'll not able to  convert those arabs who ares known fighters and well known for there brave fights

  13. From what I know, the prophet ask muslim to fight if non-muslim attack them. I learn sirah(Islam's history)

  14. Prophet Muhammad (saww) never started any war. Islam is against war, but if someone is willing to fight you and if your deen (religion) is in danger, go protect your religion and fight for the cause of Allah. It was the kuffar (abusufyan being the head of them) back then, present day sunni extremits/wahabis who hated the Prophet and Imam Ali (as) that time and waged war against Islam, but Alhamdolillah, who can fight the Lion of Allah, Ali ibn Abi Talib (as)? As usual, Imam Ali was victorious in every battle He fought and won the Heart of Rasoolullah (saww), though He already had ever since before He was even born!

  15. A few selected verses from the Qur’an are often misquoted to perpetuate the myth that Islam promotes violence, and exhorts its followers to kill those outside the pale of Islam.

    1.    Verse from Surah Taubah

The following verse from Surah Taubah is very often quoted by critics of Islam, to show that Islam promotes violence, bloodshed and brutality:

"Kill the mushriqeen (pagans, polytheists, kuffar) where ever you find them."

    [Al-Qur’an 9:5]

    2.    Context of verse is during battlefield

Critics of Islam actually quote this verse out of context. In order to understand the context, we need to read from verse 1 of this surah. It says that there was a peace treaty between the Muslims and the Mushriqs (pagans) of Makkah. This treaty was violated by the Mushriqs of Makkah. A period of four months was given to the Mushriqs of Makkah to make amends. Otherwise war would be declared against them. Verse 5 of Surah Taubah says:

"But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is oft-forgiving, Most merciful."

    [Al-Qur’an 9:5]

This verse is quoted during a battle.

    3.    Example of war between America and Vietnam

We know that America was once at war with Vietnam. Suppose the President of America or the General of the American Army told the American soldiers during the war: "Wherever you find the Vietnamese, kill them". Today if I say that the American President said, "Wherever you find Vietnamese, kill them" without giving the context, I will make him sound like a butcher. But if I quote him in context, that he said it during a war, it will sound very logical, as he was trying to boost the morale of the American soldiers during the war.

    4.     Verse 9:5 quoted to boost morale of Muslims during battle

Similarly in Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 the Qur’an says, "Kill the Mushriqs where ever you find them", during a battle to boost the morale of the Muslim soldiers. What the Qur’an is telling Muslim soldiers is, don’t be afraid during battle; wherever you find the enemies kill them.

    5.    Shourie jumps from verse 5 to verse 7

Arun Shourie is one of the staunchest critics of Islam in India. He quotes the same verse, Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 5 in his book ‘The World of Fatwahs’, on page 572. After quoting verse 5 he jumps to verse 7 of Surah Taubah. Any sensible person will realise that he has skipped verse 6.

    6.    Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer

Surah Taubah chapter 9 verse 6 gives the answer to the allegation that Islam promotes violence, brutality and bloodshed. It says:

"If one amongst the pagans ask thee for asylum, grant it to him, so that he may hear the word of Allah; and then escort him to where he can be secure that is because they are men without knowledge."

    [Al-Qur’an 9:6]

The Qur’an not only says that a Mushriq seeking asylum during the battle should be granted refuge, but also that he should be escorted to a secure place. In the present international scenario, even a kind, peace-loving army General, during a battle, may let the enemy soldiers go free, if they want peace. But which army General will ever tell his soldiers, that if the enemy soldiers want peace during a battle, don’t just let them go free, but also escort them to a place of security?

This is exactly what Allah (swt) says in the Glorious Qur’an to promote peace in the world.
