Question:

Why did Requip go generic so soon?

I just picked up my prescription for Requip and found out it has just gone generic. I'm a little confused about this since my understanding was that this drug first came out in 2005 and that drugs get to be patented for 17 years before becomming a generic. So if this is the case, then why has Requip gone generic after being on the market for only three years?

  1. The clock starts ticking when the chemical compound is patented not when it hits the market.  it may take years of testing before it is approved for use and hits the shelves.
