From what I understand, Georgia violated international agreements by attacking South Ossetia.  I think the manner in which they went in caused concern regarding humanitarian catastrophe and possible genocide.  Russia is, supposedly, bound under an agreement to act as a peacekeeping force there and therefore responded.

    Yes, Russia has strategic interests there, such as the pipeline that provides the west access to energy markets in Central Asia, as well as a desire to keep Georgia from joining the EU and NATO.  This might be why after a cease fire was signed that Russia is continuing to move further west.

Georgia did ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong.  Russia clearly invaded Georgia.  There are guerrila troops in that section of Georgia that have been waiting for an opportunity to take over the is part of Goergia that Russia wants.  Russia wants land.  They want their USSR back.  This new president is making that crystal clear.
