Quite difference in terran, since they really didn't have a army pretty easy wasn't it. why don't you go to Iraq, and you tell us what you really think

The fighters in Iraq are part of the civilian population.  The only way to "win" would be to go Old Testament on Iraq -- kill every man, woman, and child;  burn every shrine;  melt down or burn or destroy every cultural artifact.  We don't do that because of the international repercussions.

Good one.   Yes, Georgia was a bit more stable, but not that much more.

Well, first is that the two countries are just the opposite in size... it's easy to secure an area the size of Rhode Island, but it's another story to secure something the size of Texas.  That being said, Georgia was a military action... there are no guerrilla warfare going on the way it is in Iraq.  Add to that that there are no suicide bombers, roadside bombs, etc, then go figure!  And, finally, the USA has been in Iraq for 5 years... the Russians have been in Georgia for 10 days... quite the difference.  Let them stay there for years and you will see an opposition movement.

The US won the war in Iraq in a couple of weeks.  Since then, we've been policing the country and there has not been a clear identifiable enemy since then.

In Georgia, there are defined sides in the conflict and not a bunch of cowards hiding behind civilians and organizing roadside bombs and suicide bombings.

Iraq had a significantly more powerful military than Georgia and still got smashed by the US in no more time than it took Russia to smash little Georgia.

As I recall, in the days following our initial attack on Iraq, for all intents and purposes, it seemed like a slam dunk as well. That was because the majority of the Baathist military took off their uniforms and blended into the populace to later become insurgents. If you are ready to call the ball on this one, then you are very short-sighted, or have little grasp of military history.

Now, just suppose that in the weeks and months to come, pro-democracy volunteers pour into Georgia and form a resistance against the occupying Russians, just as Islamic Jyhadists from Syria and Iran have done in Iraq to attack the reconstructing Allied forces. Do you not think that the Russians would soon find themselves in a similar scenario?

Apart from apples and oranges you're comparing? Georgia isn't supported by a large terrorist network who uses the country as a training camp for insurgency. Georgia is way smaller. And, as someone before me already said, wait it out, Georgia will come back and fight again.

The went in to Iraq for their oil, second the only construction going on in iraq is the housing for the ocupping forces and their kids, in addition , the construction of the most expensive US embassy the size of half of Bagdad. Why Georgia easier because their are coward afraid to be self destructing devices or human bombs defending their land and oil like the Iraqis.

We defeated the Iraqi Army in only 21 days.  That was the easy part since they wore uniforms and identified themselves as a military force.

For the past five years we have been fighting an insurgency who fights in civilian clothes, plants IEDs, and hides behind innocent CIVILIANS so we are unable to return fire without several court-martials and bad publicity.  We could annihilate every single insurgent in Iraq today if we wanted to but the method it would require would cause us to be no better than the Third Reich.  Since that isn't an option we have to wait until the innocent Iraqis get tired of the insurgents and give us the information we need to do our job.

Ron W had a very good answer...and we went into iraq and invaded them in 3 weeks, thats the equivilant to russia taking georgia in 5 days because they are are much smaller than iraq.

Russia was in Afganistan a loooong time for this same reason

A uniform to fight helps.  However its more of a mistake on our part than the enemy.  Russia picked a good time to show up the US
