Why did Spain choose a different time zone than U.K or...?

Is it really becuase Spain prefers more light at night?....or is that just a rumor

It's because of the meridians... Spain is one meridian east of Greenwich, whiich gives it one hours difference.... The Canary Islands are on the same meridian as the UK, and have one hour less than in continental Spain, same as England!
