  2. Starbucks said Tuesday it is cutting almost 1,000 non-store jobs as part of its bid to re-energize the brand and boost its profit by cutting costs. The announcement follows plans to close more than two-thirds of its stores in Australia by the end of the week.

In a letter to all employees, Chief Executive Howard Schultz said the gourmet coffee chain is reducing the number of positions and partners across the U.S.

"Unfortunately, some of the decisions will result in not only store closures, which we announced earlier this month, but a restructuring of our organization that will eliminate some positions," Schultz said.

The surprise announcement came a few weeks after the global coffee shop franchise that has become ubiquitous around the world announced it was closing 600 company-owned stores in the United States to try to bolster its business.
