Why did Thompson's ear pop when Kimbo hit him?

I've never seen that before. Is that common when someone like Kimbo hits your ear?

thompson had cauliflower ear, common for wrestlers. making it pop is uncommon, so that was cool.

Not common. Thompson has what looked like Cauliflower ear, but may have been a hemotoma which is essentially a collection of blood. So the trauma of a stiff shot caused it to pop like a zit.  I'm guessing he may have to have that ear drained. I've seen pictures of him before last night and his ear was not normally that swollen so I'm guessing it may have happened in training leading up to the fight. Check out his pic at Sherdog.com

Yes it is uncommon but I have NEVER seen an ear that puffed up before.  That thing was asking to get popped.
