  4. It is now believed that while he was sharing his apartment with Gauguin that the incident happened. The situation was not what Van Gogh envisioned and that winter was a miserable season, the two men stuck in a small space were soon at each other in frustration and bickered with each other.

Gauguin was an excellent swordsman and it is now believed that Gauguin in a fit of anger was the one responsible for the mishap. It's assumed that Gauguin cut off Van Gogh's ear with a rapier. After the incident he left Arles and Van Gogh was left to himself.

The scholars are beginning to believe that Van Gogh did not cut off his own ear, he lost it in an argument gone horribly wrong with his roommate Gauguin.
