According to my knowledge Britain's have always been in quest to find new horizons from where they can steel away all the natural resources bestowed to that particular area, and to carry these resources back to UK before any one else does specially France or Germany.
In fact there was a race between few nations who were ahead in Arms race at that time, and they need to gather more and more energy sources which can help them to strengthen the Army Troops by all means.  
And from Ghana they not only gathered the natural resources but also got equipped with huge manpower.
