A bird laid eggs on my screened in porch (I believe its a Carolina Wren). It had a pretty small nest, and now the babys are 3 days old, there are 4 of them and its pretty tight packed in there. Well, I just found one of the babys dead on the ground about 10 feet away from the porch.

Im almost positive it wasn't my dogs because they can't get in the plant the birds are in, and we have been keeping them off the porch as best as we can.

Do you think the mother bird could have "thrown one away" because there wasn't enough room in the nest. Could it have died in the nest and the mother then removed it? It doesn't have bite marks and is not damaged so i know another animal didn't get to it.

What could have caused the bird to be that far from the nest?

*The nest is in a plant about 5 feet tall. It is a nest where the whole thing is covered and the opening to it is on the side.

  2. Most likely, another bird, such as a blue jay ,took the baby and just dropped it.Blue jays are notorious for stealing and killing the young of other birds. I have seen them take a baby bird from a nest and then just drop it from the air, killing it instantly. Why they do it,I don't know, but as it's nature at work, there isn't much to be done.
