  1. because at the height they fly its very cold and windy and need protection for there head as they need to concentrate on navigation and flying there plane. they were not crash helmets though just leather caps with a fitting to have an earpiece for communication in them.

  2. So that when their helmets were found they could be

identified by their faces still in the helmet.

  3. it was a recommendation from the risk assessment they had to carry out ahead of their missions

  4. Becasuse they were sick of hearing this question..

  5. Why do people keep posting this "question"?  It isn't funny.  It wasn't funny the last forty times it was posted.  It was barely funny ten years ago when we all received the same email.

These aren't funny either: "Why don't they build the whole plane out of the same material they make "black boxes" (which are actually orange) out of?" OR "If a plane crashes on the border of x*x and YYY, where do they bury the survivors?"

  6. to keep them safe till they reached whateever they were going to destroy

  7. I thought they just wore a scarf

  14. health and safety!

  15. In case they failed to die.................? Brain damage?

  16. it was used as a weapon as well..

when plane blows up & subsequently pilot gets decapitated, his helmet  becomes secondary missle.  decapitated head by itself is too weak.  decapitated head with helmet becomes secondary lethal weapon.  nothing gets wasted to kamakazes
