Question:

Why did mom abandon her kitten

I'm often clueless when it comes to cat behavior, and that holds true here. I don't have time to research this so I'm asking you: Why would a cat give birth to one lone kitten and then abandon it? It's possible that it may have been killed but that seems unlikely, and since there's readily available food nearby, going off hunting doesn't seem likely either. I *suspect* the mother was nearly a kitten herself, if that provides any insight.

FYI - I have a rescuer coming to pick up the 4-day old kitten (approximate age) this evening. We're taking pretty good care of in the meantime.

  1. You probably handled the kitten WAY too much and got YOUR scent all over it.

That causes the mother to not want it anymore because she doesn't think it is hers.

  2. How long has she left it for - also- if it is under one pound , shelters often euthanize- so make sure that Mom isn't just taking a break- it means life or death for that little one-  you can't nurse it until its over one pound?  Call that shelter back and ask them what their policy is on this lil guy before you just hand him over.

  3. couldn't handle the responsiblity

  4. Young mom cats often don't have a clue what to do when it comes to their kittens. It's a myth that instinct always kicks in. She may have had complications with birth and gone off to die. It may remain a mystery as to her whereabouts. I know the kitten is in very capable hands. Good luck.

  5. The smaller the litter the younger the mother, generally speaking.  If the mother cat shows up again, please get her spayed so neither you nor her has to go through this again.  She can get pregnant again within 3 weeks of delivering.
