It's about 2.5 inches long, and is a fancy goldfish.

  1. The colour black is unstable genetically in goldfish and they will change colour. Stress can also cause this.

A 5 year old fancy goldfish should be 6"-8" long, if yours is 2.5" it's horrendously stunted and probably suffering.

  2. Cant tell you why, but goldfish have some pretty weird genetic traights, and changing color at random seems to be one of them.

Most goldfish start out silver/grey as babies, and get their true colour later... maybe yours was just much later.

Anyway, it's not your care that caused the change, its a genetic thing. Maybe if more people could keep their goldfish alive for 5 years it might be more common.

But enjoy you new 'Gold' fish  :-)

its just what some goldfish do

  5. genetics has alot to do with goldfish changing color...i have had goldfish for years and they change different colors...its perfectly normal...

  6. someone snuck inside your home while you were sleeping and switched fish on you
