Why did my Sony VAIO stop reading or playing CDs/DVDs? ?

My VAIO will not even notice any discs inserted into the disc drive. No DVDs CDs or software discs. Is there anything I could try before having to hassle with SONY customer service and repairing?

If anyone has ideas or knowledge to share about this I would really appreciate it! Thanks!
