Question:

Why did my cat's eye pop out when she died?

My 14 month old cat was knocked down a few hours ago, and I've just been to pick up her body. The man who found her had put her into a box and covered her with a towel.

I know I shouldn't have looked, but I had to know it was really her.

Anyway, the point being that her eye was popped out, and I'm wondering if it's because of the car's impact, or whether that's just a normal stage of rigor mortis.

I haven't taken her out of the box, so I don't know what state the other side of her head is in. The side I saw looks ok, apart from her eye. There's blood in the box though, so it's possible she's quite badly injured on the other side.

  1. I am so sad for you and the kitty. From putting animals down when I worked in the vet, I can tell you it was probably from the car. I've never seen a cat's or dog's eye pop out just from putting it to sleep.

  2. Oh god just bury the poor thing already.

And yes it probably popped out cause of the force of the impact.

  3. First of all, I want to compliment the man who found your cat and took the time to put her in a box and cover her with a towel.  Most people could not be bothered at all.

I would have looked to, just to be sure it was my pet - but I think the eyeball thing would have haunted me for a long time.  So sorry you had to see that.  I would surmise it's from being hit by a car.

  4. That's really sad. I'm so sorry. The exact same thing happened to my cat who was knocked down when I young, his eye was popped out having been knocked down and this is definitely due to the impact of the car.

The best thing to do is try and wrap her up well in a towel or blanket and bury her straight away it best to remember her as she was.

    Sorry for your loss.

  5. honey first of all I am sorry about you loss that really sucks, that is why I do not let my cats outside for that reason, I would like to see them again and again etc.  I think that happened because of the force of the hit.  Good luck and if you get another keep this one in the house do youself and the cat a favor.  Average lifespan for outdoor/'indoor cats is 2-4 years.  If you have a baby would you let it go outside by himself, well that is how a cat should be treated.  I'm so sick of irresponsible pet owners!!!

  6. Ohhhh, you have my deepest sympathy!!!
