Why did my cat run away?

my cat, has been missing for about three weeks now. i hear that some cats run away before they die? did my cat do that?

my cat is only about three years old. and it had no signs of sickness. he is primarily an indoor cat, but sometimes we let him go outide for a few hours. and he normally just stays in our back yard. but we did have company in for a while and they had kids, is it possible with all of the commotion going on that our cat just got sick of it all and left? the company has already left our house, so i would think that my cat would have come back by now. and is it possible that one of the kids hurt him, and he went out side to die? please help. thank you.

my cats run away too...hes just six months old and he wasn't neutered....hope he comes back. I have tried everything, calling him, looking throughout the neighborhood and even putting his favorite toy out. I also put up flyers and called animal shelters...there is no sign of him anywhere...will he come back?
