Question:

Why did my colored dahlias turn white?

Why did so many of my dahlia tubers produce white flowers? I bought a couple of white dahlias but I now have 9 dinner-plate plants that are white or light yellow-white. They make a stunning bouquet and my neighbors are NOT complaining when they get their bouquets from me. I bought many dahlia tubers from Home Depot or local nurseries as opposed to directly from dahlia farms as I have done in the past. Could this be the cause? I dig all my tubers up after the first freeze (in Mass.) and store them carefully for the next year. I will need to cull some of these white tubers and hope that I can re-build my wonderfully colored inventory.

Is radiation causing mutations?

Thanks,

Alex

  1. I had many different colored dahlias, and this year all the plants are white.  Why do I have this mutation.  To be truthful, I'm not that crazy about the white flowers, and would rather haSXxve a mixture.  What happened - Joan
