Question:

Why did my feet hurt while ice skating?

I just went ice skating for the first time in like 20 yrs. I skated like 20 minutes and I couldn't take the pain no more. I use to play rollerhockey and I'm really good on rollerblades. Is it because I haven't skated in a long time, and my muscles are too weak. Or is it because I had some bad house skates. I can tell you they were the right size.

  1. I'd say it's the skates. Even though your muscles are weak, there's no logical reason why they would c**p out after only 20 minutes of basic skating.

Either the skates don't fit, they are broken down, they aren't good quality to begin with or whatever.

I'd say don't skate again if you have blisters, those hurt real bad. If you do have one, cover it with a band-aid until it flattens down. Put your feet in ice cold and then warm water alternating for an hour. You could just pour two buckets and watch a tv show on a sofa and do this, it will really relax your feet.

If you can do rollerblading without any problems, there's no excuse why a similar sport should except that either your skating technique is amazingy poor only on the ice or that the skates are very bad quality.

  2. i think that it just takes a while for the skates to break in. because your foot shape doesn't match the skate perfectly, some parts of the skate will push down on your feet.

  3. this is a common problem when u havnt skated in ages. its cos theres a lot of pressure on your foot muscles and since they arent used to it they hurt. if you started skating more they will become tougher and be able to take your body weight.

  4. Part of it is the disuse - you haven't skated in a while, so you feel it. But a far bigger part of it is the crappy house skates. I've found that when beginners, for example, buy the Jackson Softecs or other skates like that, their feet hurt far less than they do in some of those old rental skates. So I suspect your skates were at fault, at least in large part.

  5. There could be many reasons, but heres a few I know of...

    - you didn't stretch before you went on the ice

    - you are usually wearing shoes wear it is flat on the ground, and suddenly after 20 years you wear some skates with a thin line to balance your weight it would be sore, and you won't be use to that until you have been a couple of times. its like if you havn't played any sports for a while, and then you suddenly work out alot in one day, you would feel acing all over you body, your muscles would feel tight aswell..

    - it can sometimes be the ice skates that you were wearing, and if you didn't tie them up tight enough

I have had this problem before, when I first started going ice skating it happened, but after 2 more times I went the pain had gone, because my I was use to wearing the ice-skates and skating. I use to ice skate every friday, and then i quit going for a couple of months, and then when i went back my feets were hurting really bad, because i havn't done that sport in a while, i needed to get use to it again.

  6. The skating muscles in your feet haven't been used in so long . . . and you gave them a work out in your recent skating outing!  Plus after 20 years, our bodies just aren't the same . . . no matter how good you used to do something.  If you skated regularly again, it probably wouldn't be as painful as your feet get used to being in skates.

But next time you skate, you might want to massage your feet and do some stretches for your feet before you go on the ice!!  Proper warm up can help a lot!

Rental skates are never "comfy" either, even with the correct size - so that probably had a lot to do with your painful feet as well.  It's made for the "average" foot . . . so although it may have been correct lengthwise, perhaps it wasn't widthwise.

So the pain was probably a bit of both!   :)

  7. You skates probably did not fit properly, often times they may seem to fit properly but they are not wide enough or they aren't quite right. Also rental skates are always not the most comfortable types of skates.
