Why did my friend tell me that the par on the golf course is 3 but the website says its a 72 which one is it..

Maybe your friend misunderstood what you were asking.  Par of the course would be 72 and not 3.  That would be one of the holes on the course.

par for a hole can be 3, but for a round 72

It would be Par 72.  There are 2 par different par numbers is golf.  There's a par number for each hole, Par 3, 4 or 5 depending on the distance.  The golf course's par is the total of all the hole's par number added together.

Apparently there was a misunderstanding. Your friend may have answered you for the par on a particular hole. Your question may have been for par for the whole course. From the question itself, it would appear you have no golf education or exposure or the question would never have been asked.

A normal 18 hole golf course is a par 72. Some of the longer courses can be par 73 or maybe even par 74.

for every hole their is a certian amount of strokes it should take 2 get to the green, and then add 2 more strokes 2 putt the ball in the hole...thats the par for that hole

for a golf course theirs 18 holes and 3 par's per hole 3,4,5 median being 5 so lets do some simple math... 4 times 18 equals 72 so thats the usuall par 4 the hole golf corse *sometimes their are more 3's or 5's so its not always 72 but it usually is
