Why did my hamster die??

Question

my hamster died last night :-( my partner saw him an hour or so before and he was fine,he hadnt been poorly or anything.I went in to see him and found him slumped over his food bowl not breathing and he was quite stiff so im guessing he had been there a little while.he was 1 year and 10months old. just wondering if anyone knows why he might have died?? as it was quite sudden.thanks for ur answers.he will be missed!! :-(

Sorry to hear this sad news.  Sounds like he was a much loved hamster though and that is the most important thing.  Unfortunately, hamsters can take ill very suddenly and for no apparent reason and I would guess that he had a heart attack or something like that.

I'd say that you have to try and look at it from the point of view that at least he did not have to endure a long uncomfortable illness - if it was a heart attack it would have been very sudden and he wouldn't have known anything much about it - he'd have died happy.

I sooo sorry to hear about your hamster. :-( My hamster just passed away to weeks ago and I was heart broken and you probably are to. Its probably just of old age because mine was fine the day before she died running around her cage and all. She was going to be 2 September 15.

Also they could of got sick for something like a heart attack or something.  Once again sorry to hear about your loss.

I think it was probably old age. They usually live from 2-3 years, so it's not far off from his time.

I am sooo sorry to hear about your little guy. It was very sad when my hamster died. Ummm, a reason could be this. Hamsters are at petstores until they are six months old. It could and probably was old age. Sorry to hear that.

hi sorry to hear it. i have had 4 hamsters and the same thing happened to one of mine. i took her to the vet and he explained to me that because she was 2 years old that it a common age for hamsters to have heart attacks but he suspected that it could have been a stroke or a heart attack. sorry

Im sorry to hear about your hamster : (  unfortunately have a really short life span only about 2-3 years so it might have just been his time to go. Hope your ok.

most hamsters dont live very long. if he was a russian dwarf hamster then thats about how long they usually live until. 1 year to 1 and half, but mine is actually 2 years old

He may have had a sudden heart attack, or he might have choked on some of his food (since you found him over his food dish), or even a stroke. That's what happened to my gerbil (only the effects were noticeable for a few days before he died).

Maybe he had food stuck in it's pouch? It is useless at the vets, mine had lost it's balance and we took it to the vets. They said it was sudden tempature change, i dont think so! I know this sounds weird, i held it and i could feel food in it's pouch. If you have a dwarf, they're not so much a long living hamster. Maybe it died of old age? It could have been the runt of the litter? They dont last as long.

Hi, A hamster's normal lifespan is around 2 years old, he could have had an undetected heart condition, or some other condition. They can get wet tail.   I have had quite a few hamsters in the past and they have passed suddenly. It is really upsetting as they are lovely little animals.  I had one hamster (we still have his mum, long story pregnant when we got her) who only had 3 legs he only lasted for 12 months but he had a good life.  So sorry to hear of your hamster.

Oh I'm so sorry about your hamster. :( I know how it feels to lose a hamster. But he probably had a good life. I think he died of old age.

hamsters have a very short life time at the most two years yours was pretty old and he might have had a heart attack maybe something was wrong with his food anything is possible and don't be to sad he is on the rainbow bridge playing with a ton of other little hamsters i have a roborovski hamster and he isn't the nicest but i sure do love him and you love him/her to. So does god and your hamster is probably crawling up a little kids arm that didn't get to be on earth very long

I AM A HAMSTER BREEDER your hamster lived a good age there normal life span is 2 years only 2 months off. from the looks of what you found your hamster may have died of old age or possibly as you mention he was buy the food bowl he may have choked. you shouldn't feel you did anything wrong. get another one. ! i love the little fellows
