Why did my new top smell like grease when I washed it?

I purchased it from Jeans west, and my sister got the same top and the same thing happened (nothing else in the wash was smelly), yet when it dried it was ok? We live in different towns so it was not the same washing machine or detergent.

well then it must be the top itself...

Might be the brightners or other chemicals used to make the shirt. Try washing with bakinng soda
