Question:

Why did my schools cancel classes?

It was 3 degrees below zero, and when the Pittsburgh Public Schools Closed, all the schools just closed as well last year. Why do they close because of 3 below? We had a 2 hr. delay. And why when a major school closes all the others just close too?

  1. Why are you complaining about cancelled school?  You should be hoping school is cancelled.

  2. It's because of transportation to and from school mostly.  They don't want tiny bodies freezing at bus stops.  Children are much more prone to hypothermia than adults are.

  3. What the h*ll? It was -13 F with a -35 F wind chill last week and we ran a normal schedule. Maybe pittsburghians can't handle the cold.

  4. Maybe it affects "diversity."

  5. Concern for the health and well being of the students no doubt. 3 below zero is dangerously cold if your get caught unprepared for it.

  6. Because school kids have been fainting in the cold .

  7. I suspect it will be directed by legislation as it is in the UK. Even if it is not, then all schools have a duty of care, which means that they must ensure your health and safety to the best of their ability whilst you are in the school's care. If it is that cold it could also lead to issues about getting children and staff home safely, again, the school has some responsibility for this (duty of care), as do you and your parents.

See this link for information on UK minimum temperatures you will probably be able to find the relevant law for your area if you are interested.
