This is a course for adults. I haven't been to school for a long time. How will reading my poem out loud help me in writing poetry?

  1. It's my opinion that when writing a poem we give it a certain rhythm. There are words that need to be whispered, spoken softly, normal, and loud.  There are pauses and inflections in your voice... the prosodies. A poem requires a musical instrument, it needs to be played... the voice is the instrument.

Obviously your teacher knew those things.

add: I think poets can do it in their head as a voice, but then your teacher wouldn't know what that sounds like. This was an excellent question.

  2. Reading loud will help us know about the musical perfections and imperfections of the poem....certain words wont match each other when they come in adjacent positions. when we read silently, we wont be able to recognize it, but on reading loud the obstructions will come clear...

poems are meant to please the tongues and not to tease the tongues..

it must flow in words profuse and not at all by words confuse

so reading a poem loud is a must...since sounds are of that improtance.

  3. This will help you hear the mistakes you may have made, or if something doesn't make sense. Teachers have everyone do this. :)

  4. Usually when I have to do poetry projects,

I read mine aloud before I turn it in.

That way, I can make sure it says exactly what I want it to,

and it flows the way I meant it to flow.

Reading your poem aloud lets you make it exactly the way you imagined it to be. If it sounds right to you, then turn it in :)

  5. Significant questions like this compel answers.

You stood before the class to learn presentation and to 'hear'.

Yes, we write poetry as it flows from our heart, expressing whatever emotions we feel or want to express for whatever reasons. We read repeatedly to get our thoughts on paper, remove wordiness, and listen for rhyme and meter. Our final readings are to benefit those who read our poetry.

Reading helps the poet to hear, as well as feel, and to know if the poetry meets the respected requirements that readers deserve. Unawareness causes us to believe that when poetry flows from the core of our being it is correct and needs no editing. Unedited poetry is perfect for personal journals. While, it is true, some poetry first time written, is written well, I think all poetry needs much editing.

Reading reveals the naked poetry so that we can add the rules to enhance our writings. I suppose it is better to know there are rules, but not be familiar with them, than not know there are governing rules.

  6. This I can not answer as Poetry to me is a thing that comes from the Heart.

Therefore if it makes sense and has meaning to the Writer, that is all that matters.

  7. Because that 'd make you the first critic of your poem, who 'd give an honest opinion about whether this poem expresses your feeling or not. In addition, it gives you the chance to evaluate your usage of poetry devices. Your teacher's advice is very valuable! I can't wait for your last comment !!

  8. Does it read well, smoothly, does it sing?  That's a quote from my teacher.  Now I read every poem of mine, and those of others, out loud.
