  1. Oliver Cromwell was not actually one of the men who started the Civil War (which by the way was originally against Charles the first, not Second).  he only rose to prominence later in the war, after most of the original leaders of the parliamentarians were dead.

Parliament rebelled against King charles I because he tried to govern without them, imposing taxes they had not approved etc.  John Pym, John Hampden, th eEarl of Essex and the Earl of Manchester were the chief leaders of the Parliamentary side in the early years of the Civil War.  Oliver Cromwell rose to prominence in the later stages of the war, after he and Sir thomas Fairfax had created the New Model Army.

  2. felt he was chosen by God to reform government

  3. 2 major reasons.

-the Stuart kings were catholic, while cromwell was a puritan protestant

-the crown had need for a lot of money, so taxes were heavy and the merchant class from which cromwell stemmed bore the brunt of those.

  4. I think you mean Charles I.  Charles II did not come to the throne until the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, which was after Cromwell's death.

Also Svartalf is not quite correct in stating that the Stuart kings were Catholic.  Though they were descended from Mary Queen of Scots who was Catholic, James I, Charles I, and Charles II were all Protestant rulers.  Though Charles I married a Catholic, and Charles II grew up at the French court among Catholics.  James II, Charles II brother, was the only Catholic Stuart who ruled England.
