earthquake in China?

After all, there were more victims in latter events than in the former.

I'm not trying to blame anyone. I myself was also more touched by the terrorist attacks.

But I feel guilty because of that.

  1. Did you notice that you said 'people' meaning Europeans? Because in fact, if you asked PEOPLE, meaning different people from around the Globe, I don't think they at all would be more concerned about 9/11 than the natural disasters in Asia. Asian people would probably be 'touched' more by the Asian disasters. Do you see what I mean? YOU answered best to your question! Europeans would have been touched more about 9/11 rather than the cyclone and the earthquake in Asia because even though they can subconsciously feel gulity about it, they do not think of the rest of the world as PEOPLE! (well maybe outside of the North America and Australia, continents largely inhabitated by former Europeans).

  2. In addition to what Viking said...

Myanmar has not produced as much enticing (dare I say seductive) mass media products for the massive consumption of the rest of the world.

Thus, Myanmar has not so cleverly placed itself into the psyche of the rest of the world's inhabitants as has American culture.

Social Psychology indicates that people automatically have a fondness (soft spot) for that which they are most familiar with.  Being far more familiar with the well-marketed American society, the rest of the world is more inclined to be interested in the U.S.'s troubles than in Myanmar's.

This is not to say that this is a good or moral thing, merely a highly probable thing, due to the natural functioning of the human mind.

  3. I think the reason is the September 11 attack was done by people with agenda while Myanmar and china disasters are the outcome of brutal nature. so as you see the first case was premeditated murder while the other isn't.

  4. one is artifificial , the other natural.

  5. I believe natural disasters are easier to accept than man-made disasters.

  6. One was done by mother nature (the cyclone) and the other was a planned terrorist attack by man (9-11).
