  1. Land mine history can be traced as far back as the American Civil War, but the models we know today were developed in World War II.

The purpose is obvious: to maim or destroy an enemy's troops without betraying your own position or sacrificing any of your troops. From a purely military standpoint, land mines (originally called 'land torpedoes') are ingenious. Large bodies of troops (or armored vehicles) can be destroyed, making the enemy weaker, and thus easier to dispatch.

Placement of land mines are usually mapped. When the war is over, the land mines are supposed to be removed and defused. Records can be lost or destroyed accidentally, however, and oftentimes the mines are left behind by a retreating force, to bedevil the new occupying army. Mines from World War I are still being discovered and destroyed, and will undoubtedly plague future generations, too.

Remember that in war the purpose of a soldier is to destroy the enemy as quickly and as efficiently as possible. War is a dirty, terrible, cruel business, and it is one of civilization's biggest tragedies.

  2. Actually, the intent is not to destroy legs and lives, but to protect land and people.  Why would we go to war with hitler?  Kill to protect.

  3. the answer is so obvious

  4. Mines are defensive weapons used by the military in order to slow down an enemy force of force them to move in another direction.  Contrary to popular belief - the military purpose of a mine is _not_ to actually kill or wound the enemy.

They are no more 'mean' than any other military weapon.

About 10 years ago - and with much fanfare - an international ban on anti-personnel landmines was implemented.  And - exactly as predicted - the only nations that were affected by this ban were those nations that already had doctrine designed to shield civilians from the effects of these weapons.  The nations that do not care about civilians simply ignored the ban.
