Why did people move out west?

Opportunity and resources.

As we populated the Eastern part of the country, folks started going where they could make a new life.  Most all of the Chicago buildings when the Chicago fire happened were built with hardwood from Ohio. The "Go West, Young Man" was common sense when it came to opportunity. Folks followed the American Dream, and it always was in the West, whether it was in agriculture, construction, mining, or all the things that supported those industries.
