  1. the emergence of knowledge of chemistry, better methods and equipment for measurement like air-pressure and temperature and even time, and formal scientific method to test theories

    (thesis, experimentation, observation, conclusion)

  2. I know that when Shakespeare wrote "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, Than are dreamt of in your philosophy" that he was using the word philosophy to mean science. This was because at one time the two were the same. There had come a time when the scientific community felt that all the test which could be done to gather data had been done, and nothing more was to be gained by doing further tests. However, not all had been done concerning correlating this data and attempting to understand what it all meant. So it was basically decided that efforts should be spent towards this end, which is where philosophy became the crux of science.  I suppose during the time you speak of some new line of scientific reasoning arose and therefore new tests were invented to explore its merits, thereby leaving the purely intellectualism of philosophy to those who wish to advance in only that.

  3. Actually it first occurred with Issac Newton's physics when he described the force of gravity as the force that governed all of the planetary bodies but did not ascribe any feelings or emotional attributes to it as was prone by the philosophers of his time.  They thought of forces, like Aristotle, as a desire to move in a particular direction.  This caused a philosophical stink in those days.

So the division actually started in the 1700s.

  4. million$gon is correct.  Also there was a separation of science and religion as the scientic method was proving that evolution and not creation was winning out.

  5. They were only staying together till the children had grown. Chemistry and Astrology are away at college so there was no reason to stay together just for parapsychology.
