Why did rumpelstiltskin want the queen's child?

In the fairy tale why does rumpelstiltskin demand the queen child? Was he trying to protect the child? Did he want an heir? Or did he want to do something evil to him, like eating him.

I think he was all about mind games and that the he wanted the only thing she wouldn't want to give up.

My guess is this, I'm guessing that rumplestilksen wanted to do something evil to the baby, cause when he took her necklace and her ring they were very valuable and probably her father gave them to her. And in the book, she kind of looked suspicious on every page...
