  1. Because of Ossetia.

It's easier to stand behind the biggest bully in the playground than be their victim, isn't it. Also, the UK gives the US a kind of historical gloss when it comes to world relations.

  2. Russia went for Georgia because Georgia was shelling areas of South Ossetia. Russia then moved its military in (that was conveniently close I might add) to protect it's peacekeepers. This started the war & Russia pushed the Georgian military back away from the civillians far into Georgia. The problem at the moment is getting Russia to give back the territory it has taken as it really is taking it's time!

As for the Cold War, the only reason that was halted was that the Soviet Union had run out of money. Now they are in a far better economic position & want to assert their military position (they have been prodding us Brits a bit to test our response for the past couple of years too). This is obviously annoying NATO members & rocking the boat slightly. Of course the new missile defence system is probably not helping matters much either. The cold war will pretty much involve the whole world & as long as it stays cold we probably won't see too much of a difference!

  3. unitedca got it in one.

Georgia were and are using the USA for their own ends.

They were caught with their hands in the cookie jar, and attacked a relatively and peace-full part of their own country.

Not so they can bring them back into the Georgian fold, but cynically as a land grab for the cronies in power.

Russia said no, and meant no.

President Bush just wants a war, quite frankly the man is totally barking mad.

America is moving toward being isolated due to Bush's madness.

In all of this Russia has acted well, with tolerance and in a measured approach.

Russia is showing no signs of going over the top as Bush would.

Big Business also wants a war, this is what brings the mega bucks in.

Britain has an ineffectual leadership that lurch from one idea to the next, with Bully Boy Bush, our Mr Brown is following meekly behind.

If we all are not very carefull, this world could achieve a war that it does not want, and certainly does not need.

However, Bush and his cronies will be happy.

  4. go further back.  WHY DID GEORGIA ATTACK S. OSSETIA?

because s. ossetian terrorists, backed by russia, were attacking georgians.

remember the schoolchildren that were killed by terrorists?  thank the ossetian/cheychens for that.  these s. ossetians are not nice people.

please don't use an abbreviated argument to villify the US

  5. Because Georgia launched a full scale military assault on Ossetia, part of Georgia that never wanted to leave Russia in the first place. Ossetia had been a de facto independent country for fifteen years. Yes, the Cold War is back, though the USA for it's part never stopped trying to isolate and destroy Russia, and after nearly twenty years of being kicked while they are down, the Russians have finally had enough and are defying NATO.

Well, the rich and powerful global corporations that run the USA also pretty much run Britain an much of western Europe. Plus it's not safe to defy the USA when Bush and company are running it.

I've been blogging about this mess for over a week:

  6. human greed and avarice.

  7. they did it because georgia used to be part of russia and they wanted to be a independent country and russia didn't approve so they bombed georgia

  8. The conflict was sparked over the region of S.Ossetia. Georgia backed by US attacked S.O. resulting in retaliation from Russia.

Russia had already warned Georgia against any such move. Georgia was supplied, armed, and trained by US and Israel. The goal to isolate Russia.

So US wants to control its sphere of influence even if it means stepping over Russia. Russia in turn has shown it will protect its interests any means necessary. For Russia any encirclement is unacceptable.

Yes if frictions continue it is likely that it might result in cold war. In this instance its not Russia but US that is provoking a second cold war, when there is no need. There is no need for Empire building in the Caucasus. The issues are S.O., Caspian OIL,, Russian encirclement, Defense shield etc.

I don't know why GB has to get involved when it actually harms their own interests. I am certain people in Britain don't favor this position either. I would assume being US ally has a lot more rewards that being in the center of EU. Also probably US will be a good ally in case of trouble.
