Why did sarah palin make a public announcement that her unmarried teenage daughter is 5 months pregnant ?

she said the daughter and father of the unborn baby are marrying, but didn't give any indication that it would be soon. what are they waiting for? if couple plans to marry anyway, it seems to me the sooner the better for the young girl and her child. does anyone else think this could have been better handled by mom to protect privacy of her daughter? and why run for vp when you know it will throw your young daughter in the public spotlight?

I'm no fan of the lady - I'm voting Obama - but let's be realistic. It was going to come out sooner or later, and if it were to come out later, it would look as if they were hiding the issue. Can we get to the real issues why Obama is better than McCain now?

I think one of the sad parts about the daughter being prego story, is that these two kids are gonna be forced to marry each other, for political reasons. Not because they loved one another, but because her mom can't have a pregnant, under aged,  unwed daughter while running for vice president.

After searching the net for info on the rumors concerning the Palin family, the only thing I found suspicious about any of it was that Sarah Palin hardly shows in the latter months of her pregnancy. What occurs to me, now, is that the Palin’s private family affairs should remain private. The thing I despise about the Bush Administration is that they’ve invaded everyone’s privacy and their supporters have aided and abetted their unconstitutional actions, wholeheartedly. Makes my skin crawl! But the Palin’s family affairs are their own business. If they have a family secret, they are entitled to it, as we are all entitled to privacy. So let’s shut up about the Palin family and focus on getting rid of these neocon criminals in Washington for good!

good point, now these kids are forced to marry for palin's political career or knowing her religious fervor, they would be forced to marry anyway.

EDIT -  i agree it is a private matter.  the issue for me is palin's religious politic regarding womens' rights.

You are exactly right!  She made the announcement to seem as if she is not hiding it.  The fact is she has a special needs infant and a pregnant unmarried teen at home and she has chosen to use them in her campaign and to abandon them for her own career.

I think she announced it because she feared being accused of "hiding" it later on. Some people are very interested in the situation because of Palin's very conservative bent. They want to know why someone so conservative has a pregnant teen, did she force her to agree to keep the baby, etc. The truth is, this is the first time a candidates' children have really been brought into the picture. Our current VP's daughter was not a major topic during the 2000 or 2004 elections, and her lifestyle is contrary to the conservative ideals. I think everyone needs to leave Palin's daughter out of it. She is a child, not a political pawn.

Palin did it to deflect rumors that her youngest son is actually the child belonging to her eldest daughter, that she faked a pregnancy to hide that her young daughter got pregnant out of wedlock.

She's probably coercing her daughter to marry so the whole thing looks better to the religious right.
