Why did shiva had to kill an elephant to give life to ganesha?

if he is called god then he should have given life to ganesh straightaway, instead of killing an innocent animal.

  2. This is a good question. There are several version of how Ganesa obtained his elephant head, and the story you are referring to is from the Shiva Purana. And although I do not have a specific answer for you, I hope you remember in the grand scheme of things, the story has very little meaning. What I mean is, don't sweat the small stuff, He is Ganapati, the lord of good fortune, and how whether or not Shiva killed an elephant is irrelevant. He is beloved by all the sects of Santana Dharma, and by many people of other faiths. I hope he has touched you as well. I am sorry if this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but I believe it to be the correct one.
