Question:

Why did so many African nations support Mugabe?

A few years ago the AU and other African associations acquiesced to the rule of Robert Mugabe? Why didn't these countries, instead demand his removal? Was because of the "anti-white/ anti-colonial " sentiment shared by many in that restive continent? What to do with the tyrant now? What can the AU do to rid Zimbabwe of this dictator? Please do not ground the charge by resurrecting talk of colonialism and white racism. Stick to the decade please!~

  1. Because African leaders all secretly wish to be dictators who are above the rule of law and can do anything they want.  None of them really believes in democracy, making their country better, or making their people wealthier.  It is all about what they can do to make themselves and their own family wealthier.  If they have to kill their own citizens and ruin their country in the process, so be it.  That is just the way it is in Africa.  Anyone who says differently is just telling the white folks from the west what they want to hear.

  2. African politics has less to do with whether one approves of the President's actions with regards to internal matters and more to do with how he votes in the AU and UN and his trade policy and support for neighboring countries.

It is up to the Zimbabwean people, not external forces to change leaders.  Reports of human rights abuses are disconcerting, but most nations, including the USA have had riots at various times in their history and it would be unusual for outsiders to intervene.

  3. African nations remember well what the whites did to the blacks in Rhodesia and South Africa so they are not going to undo what Mugabe has achieved in removing the colonials.

But  you have hit the nail on the head squarely here by living in comfort and worrying about what is happening in a small African country far away. Why?

Its easy to talk if you have not had your country taken over by foreigners isn't it.

  4. pretty much the same trend as the Obama-mania thing that is going around...kind of like a fever....or a plague
