I was born in 1961, and I went to high school in from 1977 -- 1980 . The 1960s and 1970s were heavily influenced by “women's lib” and feminism . When I was a teen -- ager, I decided I wanted a marriage that was completely free of sexism where my wife and I were equal partners . I also decided any wife of mine had to come with a regular paycheck . I'd also insist on doing my own laundry . I came to the conclusion that there are a lot of advantages to having a working wife . I figured most teen -- agers my age felt the same way I did . I thought a young boy who grew up in the 1960s and 1970s wanted a marriage that was completely free of sexism where he and his wife were equal partners, he did his own laundry, and that any wife of theirs had to come with a regular paycheck .

  1. I suppose because people are individuals and hence come to their own conclusions and beliefs, despite the press of societal or cultural influences.  And remember that there was plenty of dissent to the various societal and cultural movements of that era, including feminism.  It would not have been unusual for someone to have grown up in that time and had plenty of confirmation for a differing viewpoint.  In the end, what seems most important is that we all have some choice over what we feel is important in life.  And that we all should be able to pursue what we feel is going to make us happy.  The values of one segment of a society need not be imposed on other segments.  That is probably the best lesson to come out of that era.
