  1. The "city on the hill" idea failed because of a myriad of factors: treatment of Native peoples, slavery, the Civil War. Basically, all of the reprehensible things the government and people of the US have done that has prevented the United States from being a shining example to which all other nations look up. More recent events like the Vietnam War and Iraq War have further demonstrated this point.

I'll agree with what's been said but then add perhaps it hasn't.  Look at the true make-up of this country, we still reflect a society and population built on Puritanical ideas...the country is predominantly Protestant and ideas that are considered liberal in West Europe and other places in the world are considered very taboo here.  I'd say if we were a country of farmers like Jefferson had really wanted then the "city on a hill" would have failed completely but overall our society is still reflective of the ideas that were preached in Massachusetts Bay.
