Why did the Armenian Genocide occur?

I'm writing a book review from a fictional book based on the Armenian Genocide and I would like to include some background information in my essay. Can anyone help?

Some Armenians assisted the Russians when the Russian Army invaded the Ottoman Empire. The Turks saw this as a threat to their security, and deported all of the Armenians, and many died along the way. They were beaten, or just outright killed.
