Why did the Aztecs and the Incas think their god was the sun?

  1. Many peoples have worshiped the sun--but think of how the sun provides heat, light that needed to see, grow plants and all that--seems pretty powerful.


  2. The sun made the crops grow, and drove away the winter cold. It was a powerful symbol of raw nature and seemed to punish the people if it was displeased by covering its face(eclipse). The power seemed to require obedience and sacrifice, so they built temples and spilled the blood of the people to show the desire of the leaders to be rewarded by obedience.Cultures developed a lot of ways to recognize a power greater than themselves. I'm sure that there were priests who saw this as a way to control the population which had grown quite large so the bigger the show, the greater the gifts they received.
