  2. Pozières is a small village on high ground in the middle of what was the Somme battlefield. The British and Australians saw opportunity to gain an advantage on the Germans by taking the town. It was a strategic battle more than anything and a definite  piece in the puzzle of winning the Somme Campaign.  In a battle, having the 'high ground' is always an advantage, for observational and tactical reasons. Overall, it was just another necessity to capture for it's strategic value in order to win the over the Somme.
